Vivian’s Bio

“Impact doesn’t come from being right all the time — it comes from building something that lasts.”

Vivian Zhang

Chief Data & Technology Officer | AI Educator | Founder, NYC Data Science Academy

From building AI-powered platforms to founding one of the nation’s leading data science academies, I’ve spent the past decade at the intersection of innovation and education.

As Chief Technology Officer at Supstat Inc., I’ve led the development of products like GoDental.AI and Intrinsica.AI—translating advanced machine learning into real-world solutions across healthcare, finance, and beyond. In parallel, I direct the NYC Data Science Academy, a nationally accredited institution that has trained over 5,000 professionals since 2013 and continues to bridge the gap between academic rigor and industry application.

I currently serve as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Data Science Institute, and previously held an adjunct faculty position at Stony Brook University. I hold two Master’s degrees—one in Computer Science and the other in Applied Mathematics and Statistics—and am a proud alumna of Stony Brook University.

My dual commitment to applied AI and education has earned recognition from Forbes (“9 Women Leading The Pack in Data Analytics”) and CBNData’s Top 50 Data Scientists. Our academy has also been ranked the best online data science bootcamp.

With deep expertise in generative AI, machine learning, and statistical modeling, I focus on driving business innovation through AI and welcome collaboration on cutting-edge generative AI projects.

AI is not just a technology — it’s a new literacy.

With no marketing budget and only a handful of students, Vivian launched the NYC Data Science Academy in 2013 out of a modest office in Midtown Manhattan. She believed that data science shouldn’t be a buzzword—it should be accessible, rigorous, and practical. In the early days, she wore every hat: curriculum designer, instructor, placement coordinator, and even facility manager.

The breakthrough came when her team trained a group of career switchers—teachers, analysts, even a pianist—who went on to land data roles at leading tech firms. Word spread. Over the next five years, the academy expanded rapidly, becoming a nationally accredited program and earning recognition as the best online data science bootcamp. To date, more than 5,000 alumni have graduated and entered the AI/ML workforce.

At the same time, Vivian led engineering teams at Supstat Inc., where she served as CTO and helped launch AI-powered platforms like GoDental.AI and Intrinsica.AI. These tools were designed not for research labs, but for clinics, financial institutions, and operational teams—practical AI for real-world decision-making.

Her technical leadership was matched by academic engagement. She served as adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Data Science Institute, and previously at Stony Brook, where she also earned her Master’s degrees in Computer Science and in Applied Mathematics & Statistics.

In 2016, Forbes named her one of “9 Women Leading the Pack in Data Analytics.” CBNData listed her among the Top 50 Data Scientists. But Vivian considers her most meaningful work to be helping first-generation learners land their first role in tech—and watching them become mentors to others.

Today, Vivian splits her time between developing AI strategy for business applications and building bridges between academia and industry. She believes AI is not just a tool, but a new literacy—and she’s committed to making that literacy widespread.
